AbouT US

Our goal is to create a community among students in Microbiology, Genetics, and Biochemistry, to host events that these student groups may be interested in. Since enrollment in the stated undergraduate degrees is robust and includes students with diverse general and professional interests, we believe it is necessary to provide these student groups with a sense of community both on campus and in related fields. We aim to enrich the undergraduate students’ experience both academically and socially to promote further interest in life sciences. We plan on hosting a variety of events in order to connect students sharing similar interests, as well as professionals within the field.

Services Include:

  • Information on a degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Genetics

  • Mentoring Program

  • Speaker series

  • Networking events

  • Study sessions with food (if in-person!)

  • Free giveaways to events happening in the University

For more information on how to join or if you have questions about our group, please feel free to contact us.

MARITH BEEN (she/her)

Secretary

Hi everyone! My name is Marith, and I am super excited to be the Secretary for MiSC this year! I am going into my third year of a Microbiology Honours CO-OP degree. As secretary, I will be responsible for the communication between the executive council and MiSC members, like managing our email and responding to all your questions and queries. Within MiSC I am also responsible for many of the administrative duties.

Besides my love for science and learning, I am a huge fan of plants and am always ‘growing’ my collection. I also love hiking, mountain biking, and the outdoors in general. I enjoy being out and around other people, and drinking lots of coffee and tea, especially with friends.

I am super excited for this year, and all the upcoming fun and informative events we will host to boost your university experience and future careers. I hope that I can meet many of you, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

TIANA STEEVES (she/her)

Director of Programming

Hi everyone! My name is Tiana Steeves and I am so excited to be MiSC’s Director of Programming for the 2022/2023 school year! I am currently going into my third year of a Biochemistry Honours degree.

As Director of Programming, my role is to organize the mentoring program that connects undergraduate students interested in pursuing graduate degrees with graduate students. The goal behind this mentoring program is to give undergraduate students better insight into graduate degrees. It’s also a great way for undergraduate students to make connections with people that are involved in their field of interest. We’ll have many events throughout the school year for the mentoring program, so if you’re interested in pursuing a graduate degree make sure you stay updated on our events!

Besides learning about science, I’m also passionate about dance, music, working out, and hanging out with friends. My biggest love is teaching dance at Emerge Dance Complex where I’m lucky enough to share my love of dance with talented young artists!

I’m so excited to be back on campus this year, if you ever see me in person feel free to say hey! I’m always happy to meet new people, and I’m here to answer any questions you may have!

EMILY DUECK (she/her)

Director of Communications

Hello, my name is Emily Dueck and I will be this years Director of Communications for MiSC. I will be responsible for running the social media accounts of MiSC, including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Instagram is the best place you can go to get up to date information on all of the services and events provided by MiSC. I also communicate information from other science oriented clubs at the University of Manitoba and beyond. I hope to do my best this year to facilitate career building and social connections for our members through our social media.

I am in my third year of study as a Genetics Major (MiSC is not just for microbiology majors!). In what little spare time I have, I like to spend it at my cabin in the Whiteshell, immersing myself in nature by spending time on the river and in the forest. I also enjoy reading a wide variety of books. In the spring and summer months I spend my time growing pumpkins, tomatoes, beets, carrots and many other vegetables in my garden.

Feel free to reach out to me by direct messaging the MiSC instagram account (@misc.uofm) with any questions about the club or your experience at the University of Manitoba in general. My goal is to get back to you as quickly as possible, and refer you to other helpful resources.
